Collaborations

The UWHC Community Impact Model is designed to address social service issues. Using non-profit partners, UWHC provides funding for services targeted toward these areas of concentration. In this way, UWHC increases the capacity of the community to achieve a greater result.

HOMELESSNESS

In response to community priorities, UWHC has evolved into a recognized community leader in the efforts to increase affordable housing opportunities for homeless persons in Hudson County. UWHC’s affordable housing initiatives include operating direct housing programs, leadership in community collaborations, advocacy, information services and mobilization of government and corporate funding resources. United Way provides services through organizations such as St. Lucy ShelterPERC ShelterHoboken Shelter, Massh, Monarch Housing, Corporation for Supportive Housing, House of Faith, Dress for Success and Rebuild Together Jersey City.

Direct Services

SUPPORTIVE HOUSING Program

UWHC directly operates the US Department of Housing and Urban Development Housing First/Collaborative Solutions Program, the first-ever awarded in Hudson County. The Program has provided permanent, affordable and supportive scattered-site housing for 26 homeless households since 2006. The goal of the program is to help participants obtain and remain in permanent housing, increase their skills and income and achieve greater self-determination. UWHC locates suitable apartments throughout the community for program participants and provides rental subsidies, case management and supportive service to help stabilize their housing situation. UWHC SHP program has increased to add an additional three grants that will place individuals and families in permanent housing.

211: Information and Referral Phone System

211 creates one easy access point to the health, human services, community resources and government assistance people need every day, as well as in times of crisis. United Way provided this information and referral service for Hudson County 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round, in any language.

FEMA Program

The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program was created in 1983 to supplement the work of local social service organizations within the United States, both private and governmental, to help people in need of emergency assistance. This collaborative effort between the private and public sectors has provided over $3.7 billion in Federal funds during its 28-year history.

VITA Program

UWHC provides space to AARP and VITA-Hopes every Tax season who provides income tax assistance to low income households, many of whom were homeless, bringing Earned Income Tax Credit dollars into the community. For more information, please visit their respective sites.
